High School Initiatives manages two college access and preparation programs for high school students involved in the Connecticut College Awareness and Preparation Program ConnCAP and the First Star Academy.
The ConnCAP Program recruits students in the 9th grade from Hartford and Windham who are first-generation to college and/or from a low-income family background. The First Star Academy is funded by the Connecticut Department of Children and Families (DCF). Applicants to this program must be served by DCF. Both programs provide ongoing support year-round and a summer residential component at UConn’s Storrs campus.
